AI dying, Japan blue dyeing, is a traditional Japanese art using natural indigo dye from the tade-ai plant to create deep, rich blues, famed since the Edo period and known for its complex process of fermenting leaves into sukumo and then creating a dye vat with wood ash, lime, and wheat resulting in beautiful, long-lasting fabrics that are gentle on skin and earth.

Furumi no AI Shimizuya” is an AI dyeing shop that originated more than 200 years ago in the Edo Period (Tokugawa Shogunate) and operated for about 100 years in Furumi, a small village in Shinanomachi, Nagano Pref.

About ten years ago, many pattern papers used to dye patterns were found in the old warehouse (Kura).

The descendant owner restarted the AI dyeing shop.

Here you can find several products dyed in this shop, see the classic pattern papers, and participate in a hands-on AI dyeing workshop.
